So What Happened?
In 2018, Tropical Storm Alberto swept through the western mountainous regions of North Carolina, including Polk County and Saluda — the legendary grounds of Camp Bob Hardin. The storm brought tremendous rainfall that caused severe washouts and extensive damage across the camp.
After receiving professional assessments and cost estimates, the Palmetto Council Scouts of America Board determined that restoring Camp Bob Hardin to operational standards would not be feasible due to both the high costs and the camp’s location.
Fortunately, the Palmetto Council was blessed with another piece of land in a more centralized area. Because of this, the Council made the difficult decision to part ways with Camp Bob Hardin and pursue a sale of the property, with proceeds to be invested into developing and opening the new location for future generations of Scouts.
